Description

This kitchen/pantry cabinet was in a very bad state when we got it (see ‘before’ photos). The Formica covered top had been completely destroyed by water, so we replaced it with a beautiful ply top with rear oak edging, both made using reclaimed wood. The oak had some old drilled holes which we filled with dowels, adding a nice bit of ‘reclaimed’ character. The rest of the casing needed stripping, repairing and filling before being painted in an off-white satinwood. The drawer runners and bases were completely worn down so these were replaced, again using reclaimed wood. The inside was given a light sand to clean up the wood. The bottom edging strip, which was the only piece made of solid wood, was stripped and left bare to tie in with the bare ply top. Finally, the badly rusted handles were stripped, sanded smooth and sprayed satin black.

We are very pleased with the end result – a piece which will be stylish and practical in either a traditional or more modern kitchen or dining room. There are two (now smoothly running) drawers to the left of the original tin ‘cool box’. Underneath are two sliding doors and inside is a half shelf, increasing the storage space. The top has been finished in a water, scratch and stain resistant oil-wax blend with a satin sheen.

Dimensions: 91.5 x 46 cm, 93.5 cm tall at the back.
