Description
This is quite a special 19th Century piece in that each section is a single, solid piece of either Honduras or Cuban mahogany. It it was covered in an ugly, thick layer of varnish and was badly stained, scratched and dented. A strip of the old finish and extensive sanding has brought out the stunning figure of the wood, which shows some beautiful chatoyance.
The table is full of character – each section of mahogany has warped differently over time to give a slightly undulating surface. There is a missing section of wood above one of the hinges and a repair above another hinge. But none of this detracts from that stunning mahogany grain!
The leaves are held up by one of the legs, which hinges outwards on a beautifully rustic wooden system. The legs are on original brass casters and have been left as they were aside from a re-polish.
As this is an antique piece it will need handling with a bit of care in order to maintain its current condition – we don’t recommend it going somewhere where it will recieve a lot of abuse. As it is on casters, it will move around easily on a flat surface and would make a great space saving table.
Dimensions: 106.5 x 57 cm with the leaves down. The middle section is 51.5 cm wide, and each leaf is 58 cm. 72 cm tall.
